Southport Football Club is backing calls for the creation of three promotion places to the English Football League (EFL). The Sandgrounders are among 72 Vanarama National League Clubs who have launched a “three-up” campaign to get an extra promotion space available to League Two instead of the current two. A Southport FC spokesperson said: “All 72 Vanarama National League clubs are supporting a letter to the EFL requesting a vote to create three promotion places into their league.

Goals in the 90th and 90+2 minutes gave the home side a very unlikely victory. Southport 2 Hyde United 1 Southport FC progressed into the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round after a 2-1 win against Hyde United. A 19th minute goal for Marcus Carver, his first of the season, and an 81st minute penalty from Danny Lloyd gave Southport a comfortable 2-0 lead but Hyde kept on going and an excellent 87th minute goal from Jordan Scanlon made for a nervy final 9 minutes. It wasn’t a great spectacle but the objective of getting into the next round was achieved.

Supporters at Southport Football Club raised over £4,000 for local community projects at the weekend. A crowd of 1,257 were at the Big Help Stadium on Saturday to cheer on the Sandgrounders in their 3-2 win against Buxton, as they also supported Southport Community Day. The #OneSouthport event saw fans able to pay what they wanted to watch the match, with all the money raised going towards positive projects in the town.

Southport FC 3 Buxton 2 After three defeats in a row there was a nervousness around the ground ahead of the game but by 4.55 that had disappeared after a fine 3-2 home win for The Sandgrounders. A first ever goal for Sonny Hilton in the 14th minute put the home side ahead after some very neat build up play but this was quickly cancelled out by the visitors in the 16th minute. A shot looked to be going well wide but looked like ot caught on the wind and crept in at the far post.
