Murray again flashed his speed with a Top 10 Shootout berth, earning the Snap-On Tools Camaro a ninth-place grid slot. However, it all came undone just metres into the 200km contest when Murray locked up and speared straight ahead at the tight Turn 2 left-hander. Contact with Anton De Pasquale knocked the Team 18 Camaro off the circuit while the Erebus entry spun and was then collected by Grove Racing’s Kai Allen.

What started as a tough weekend for the Grove team ended on a high with a strategy gamble paying off in a big way for Matt Payne, who won the 200km Sunday encounter. A combination of Grove’s result and a disaster for Dick Johnson Racing – which included a double disqualification from Race 1 – means the two Ford teams swap places in the points.

But that didn’t mean team principal Jamie Whincup left Symmons Plains satisfied. Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaro drivers Broc Feeney and Will Brown finished second and third to Grove Racing’s Matt Payne in the 200km Sunday finale. Brown had started from pole but fell as low as sixth in the early laps after losing the lead to James Golding off the line and then being bumped wide by Cam Waters at Turn 4.

The Walkinshaw Andretti United driver bumped into the back of James Courtney at the entry to Turn 4 on lap 9. That sent Courtney into Will Davison, who in turn tagged Jack Le Brocq into a spin, and resulted in stewards issuing Mostert a 15-second in-race time penalty. Commentator Mark Skaife subsequently reported on the broadcast that Mostert was “blowing up deluxe on the radio, absolutely gone off his head”.

The result proved a remarkable turnaround for the Grove Ford driver who had struggled for speed all weekend and started the 200km race down in 11th. Feeney was the pacesetter, winning both Saturday races and controlling the early stages of the 78-lap finale before a Safety Car intervention brought strategy into play. Payne was among a group to clear both of his pit stops before the Safety Car restart.
