My generation was raised by many rules, especially when it came to dressing, but much was still possible away from the public eye, outside of the grown-up social scene and inside our tight and secretive tribes. I wonder how it must feel to be growing up right now online, where everyone is always on view with no place and no time to hide, always judged and always aware of being included or excluded.

What is your first memory of sharing a meal with friends? What did you eat, and what did you talk about? In Italy—in the small town outside of Florence where I grew up—my first experience of eating lunch outside of my family kitchen was in a classroom of 5-year-olds, all in blue uniforms. We’d take out our food from our backpacks, some wrapped in fancy paper, some in Ziploc bags, some in industrial packaging.
