Over the course of Leitrim County Council’s history, over 160 different men have been elected. In contrast, only eight women have been elected in the same period. Two of these women, Cllr Mary Bohan and Kathleen Coleman, were pioneers in female representation on Leitrim County Council, first elected in 1979. Cllr Bohan, from Drumkeeran, has become Fianna Fáil’s longest-serving county councillor. Her mother, Alice McTiernan, also ran for election in 1967 but was not elected.

Following the success of the Leitrim Gathering, which featured a wide range of events across the county from May 23 to May 25, there have been calls to make it an annual fixture. Sinn Féin councillor Pádraig Fallon was elected Cathaoirleach of the Manorhamilton Municipal District at Monday morning’s meeting. He was proposed for the role by outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Mary Bohan and seconded by Cllr Felim Gurn. This is the Drumkeeran man’s first time serving as Cathaoirleach. He said he was looking forward to the year ahead.

The ‘Connecting Women to Local Decision-Making in Leitrim’ seminar, hosted by Leitrim Public Participation Network (PPN) in association with the North Leitrim Women’s Centre and See Her Elected, took place in Carrick-on-Shannon on Friday, June 13. The event proved to be inspiring, uplifting, and empowering. The opening address was delivered by Assumpta Kelly of the North Leitrim Women’s Centre.
