Some days, Steps to Success’ programming means a boat excursion in Boston Harbor. Other days it means homework help, or a career skills workshop. In any form it takes, its goal is to close the “opportunity gap” between low-income students and their peers in Brookline. The nonprofit, which has been around for 20 years, has recently begun expanding its programming to more families through one-time federal pandemic aid. “We’re a big believer in foundation at Steps,” said Executive Director Nia Jacobs.

Smithfield Road church to hold celebration SundayWOONSOCKET – Our Saviour parish of the Polish National Catholic Church has overcome local tensions, fires, the death of members in World War II and an evolving membership to reach its 100th anniversary in February, which it will be celebrating in June. “If something exists already for 100 years, it means it’s something good,” said Rev. Henryk Wos, the pastor of Our Saviour’s since 2010.

At age 92, Leonard Levin is a past president and one of the longest active members of the SPJ-New England with more than 70 years in the organization. Levin began his career at the Pawtucket Times in Rhode Island, where he worked his way up to the copy desk. In 1963, he got a job as a copy editor for the Providence Journal, where he stayed for more than 30 years while also starting as an adjunct professor at the University of Rhode Island journalism department.

PROVIDENCE – Models with disabilities wearing adaptive fashion will take to the runway at Rhode Island Fashion Week this year thanks to a partnership between modeling agency HumanKind and upstart clothing company Befree. The models will be showcasing Befree’s flagship product, ZipOns, pants that have zippers going up the entire leg on both outer seams. The design makes the pants easier for people with mobility challenges or their caregivers to put on.
