As World Milk Day takes place tomorrow (Sunday June 1), the European Milk Board (EMB) is reaffirming its call for sustainably strengthening the position of milk producers in the food chain. The board has said that fair and adequate remuneration for dairy farmers is the only way to secure the future of the European dairy sector in the long-term and to ensure the supply of high-quality milk products to the population.

On the night of May 24-25, 2025, agricultural enterprises in the Chernihiv and Kharkiv regions were targeted by Russian missiles and Shahed drones, according to the Ukrainian Agri Council. The enterprises were engaged in livestock farming and potato cultivation and were among the largest in their communities. Both farms are members of the Ukrainian Agri Council which has said that the farms were destroyed.

Food prices are estimated to have risen by more than 4% since last year according to the latest data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) today (Friday, May 30). The EU Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) for Ireland is estimated to have risen by 1.4% in the 12 months to May 2025 and remained unchanged since April 2025. This compares with HICP inflation of 2% in Ireland in the 12 months to April 2025 and an annual increase of 2.2% in the HICP for the eurozone in the same period.

An investigation is underway following the discovery of one of Ireland’s oldest breeding white-tailed eagles, Caimin who was found dead in Clare last Saturday (May 24). Initial post-mortem examination results from the Regional Veterinary Laboratory indicate a possible death from poisoning. Caimin held territory at the Mountshannon nest site on Lough Derg for the past 17 years. During that time, he mated and fledged a number of chicks.
