ALBANY, N.Y. — The 77th Annual Tulip Festival is underway this weekend, with Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan expressing enthusiasm about the event. "The tulips look the best they have in years," said Sheehan in an interview with CBS 6. Friday, the festival introduced the new nominees for Tulip Queen and Tulip Court. The event also featured Albany High School students dressed in traditional Dutch attire and a performance by a member of the Capital District Youth Pipe Band.

CAPITAL REGION, NY (WRGB) — A driver is being evaluated after being rescued from the water Saturday morning. At about 10:10 a.m. State Police responded to the area of lock 12 in the Mohawk River for reports of a vehicle in the water. The driver was recovered from the water and was conscious at the time of rescue. According to state police, the driver has been transported to the hospital for evaluation. The investigation is ongoing.

ALBANY, N.Y. — Beverly Schwartz, the founder of Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM), was recognized Friday for her groundbreaking contributions to education. In the fall of 1987, Schwartz, then an elementary school teacher, initiated a partnership with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to borrow equipment and enlist college students to assist her class. This collaboration introduced hands-on learning to the classroom and marked the inception of STEM.

HUDSON, NY (WRGB) — A Hudson woman is facing charges after a complaint of inappropriate contact with a minor. On April 30, State Police received a complaint of inappropriate contact between Christina A. Lambert, 41, a former substitute teacher at Taconic Hills Central School District, and a student. An investigation determined that Lambert sent inappropriate messages to the student through Snapchat. On May 7, State Police arrested Lambert, 41, for two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

RENSSELAER COUNTY, NY (WRGB) — In a coordinated effort spanning less than 24 hours, the Rensselaer County Sheriffs Office Criminal Investigations Unit executed two separate narcotics-related search warrants, resulting in the arrests of two individuals on serious drug and weapon charges. Jeffrey C. Shaw, 44, of Yonkers, was arrested on May 8 in Hoosick Falls, following an investigation into the sale of crack-cocaine.
