Daron Beck, a former Denton musician best known as the vocalist and keyboardist of experimental sci-fi synth-doom duo Pinkish Black, has died. The band’s label Relapse Records announced the news in an Instagram post on Aug. 23. The post revealed Beck died from an illness. “Daron was a kind, tremendously funny, and gentle soul that made some of the most creative and compelling music ever released on Relapse Records,” according to the Instagram post.

DALLAS — Building a modular synthesizer is a lot like playing with Legos. These synthesizers are made up of different modules, or electronic circuits. The modules can be mixed and matched freely, and patch them together and suddenly electricity turns into sound. Keaton Collins started building his modular synthesizer in 2020. He uses it to produce ethereal, melodic soundscapes. Collins cases his modules, some which he soldered himself, in a wooden cabinet he built.

In September 2023, Reunion Tower in downtown Dallas was lighted in the colors of the Mexican flag. Mexico’s soccer team was playing against Australia in Arlington that night. But back in Dallas, on Botham Jean Boulevard, local metallic hardcore band Soledad was playing a rowdy set at Black Cat Records. Jak Davon was at the show. The Mexican-Filipino guitarist watched the all-Latino band perform on the concrete floor of the record shop, realizing something about this band struck a different chord.
