DALLAS — Building a modular synthesizer is a lot like playing with Legos. These synthesizers are made up of different modules, or electronic circuits. The modules can be mixed and matched freely, and patch them together and suddenly electricity turns into sound. kAmz62E@? r@==:?D DE2CE65 3F:=5:?8 9:D >@5F=2C DJ?E96D:K6C :? a_a_] w6 FD6D :E E@ AC@5F46 6E96C62=[ >6=@5:4 D@F?5D42A6D] r@==:?D 42D6D 9:D >@5F=6D[ D@>6 H9:49 96 D@=56C65 9:>D6=7[ :? 2 H@@56?

From melodic ambient music to experimental noise, more North Texas musicians are creating music that emphasizes mood and texture over musical structure. Many ambient and experimental musicians perform using a series of synthesizers and hardware with knobs, buttons and dozens of patch cables. They can be found playing in vacant hotel lobbies, contemporary art galleries and movie theaters. To them, it’s about finding the right spaces where art meets music.

DALLAS — Building a modular synthesizer is a lot like playing with Legos. These synthesizers are made up of different modules, or electronic circuits. The modules can be mixed and matched freely, and patch them together and suddenly electricity turns into sound. Keaton Collins started building his modular synthesizer in 2020. He uses it to produce ethereal, melodic soundscapes. Collins cases his modules, some which he soldered himself, in a wooden cabinet he built.
