Every few months, Emma Douglas would have to scour Broome's Facebook groups for a new babysitter. The babysitter wasn't for her school-age children, but for her then-toddler Lulu, for whom she couldn't access a childcare place. "[I'd] be posting on the Broome babysitting Facebook pages, begging, begging for a babysitter that could fit in with the days that I needed," she told 7.30.

In short: Educator-to-child ratios are calculated across a whole childcare service, not by individual rooms, and educators must be working directly with children in order to be counted. A childcare centre which uses the "under the roof" ratio may be counting staff that don't directly work with children, meaning legal ratios aren't being met. What's next?

Within weeks of being informed that nine-month-old baby Ada Coen had a severe egg and dairy allergy, an educator at her childcare centre in Melbourne fed her yoghurt. In August 2022 after undergoing specialist testing, Ashlea Coen emailed her daughter's childcare provider, a Guardian early education centre in Melbourne, an allergy action plan. Ashlea says she also handed in a hard copy of the plan to the front desk, and personally spoke to two educators about Ada's allergies.
