The Federal Government officially conferred Nigerian citizenship on no fewer than 1,006 foreign nationals between 2017 and 2023, findings by Sunday PUNCH have revealed. Although investiture events, organised by the Ministry of Interior and overseen by the Presidency, represent the only occasions on which new citizens receive their certificates publicly, checks revealed that others were naturalised or registered through the usual administrative channels.

APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, has declared that there is nothing wrong in Nigeria being a one-party state. He said the APC was willing and capable of integrating all defectors into its ranks. Ganduje stated that although the APC was not gunning for a one-party state, it welcomed the idea, if Nigerians wanted it.

At least 375 Nigerian citizens sought asylum in Sweden in 2024, according to the Swedish Migration Agency’s 2024 asylum application data obtained by Saturday PUNCH. Of figure, 239 were first-time claims, while 136 were follow-up “extension” requests from persons whose temporary status was about to expire. The spreadsheets, published in Swedish on the Agency’s public “Asyl” portal, detailed citizenship by applicant type, gender, and age.

Three serving senators from Kebbi State, elected on the platform of the opposition People’s Democratic Party, have formally declared their intention to defect to the governing All Progressives Congress. This followed their meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, on Friday. The lawmakers, Senators Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South), were led to the meeting by the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.
