On November 10, 2024, we celebrated the 249th birthday of the Marine Corps. Marines around the world gathered and sang “From the Halls of Montezuma To the shores of Tripoli, We fight our country’s battles In the air, on land, and sea. First to fight for right and freedom….” Familiar lyrics to many, but are they relevant today?

Donna Campbell, our current state senator, supports school choice, which would take money from our public schools to pay the tuition to send children to private schools. Most families who would be receiving the benefit have already enrolled their kids in private schools. It’s bad policy for a state that already ranks very low among its peers in funding for public schools. Campbell, a medical doctor, has no interest in supporting Medicaid Expansion in our state.

The assertion that we have “open borders” is not truthful. Thousands of people from other countries arrive at our border to apply for asylum each year. Asylum is a protection against deportation granted, by U.S. law, to foreign nationals who can prove that they would be persecuted if they were returned to their home countries. The asylum seekers must explain what happened in their home countries, what caused them to leave, and why they are afraid to return.

Our governor, Greg Abbott, last year bragged “per student funding is at an all-time high.” When public school funding is correctly adjusted for inflation, recent data from the Texas Education Agency shows that funding in 2023 was $6,629, below the 2014 figure of $6,680 when Abbott was first elected governor. Embarrassingly, Texas ranks 38th in the U.S. in per-pupil funding. Our public school teachers are paid about $9,000 less than the national average, another dismal statistic.

CLARKSVILLE, TN – When Immaculate Conception School (ICS) Eighth Grader Cailynn Runyon turned in her essay to the Middle School Language Arts teacher, the thought of winning a contest was not top of mind. The Annual Essay Contest was sponsored by the Clarksville Chapter of Kiwanis International. As in years past, students were tasked with interviewing a veteran and using that interview to respond to a question.
