Nelson Vails is flying in from San Diego and Wayne Stetina will travel from North Carolina, meeting in New Paltz for what will be one of the most significant cycling events they’ve participated in. This isn’t a competition, though, and those legends will have a chance this time to slow their roll. Literally.

The high school baseball season concluded last weekend with three Section 1 teams falling in the NYSPHSAA state finals and Iona Prep, as an underdog, winning its first CHSAA state championship. With those elite teams advancing to compete on the final day of the spring scholastic sports season, there obviously were some impressive individual performances under pressure. Who will be the lohud Baseball Player of the Week, presented by White Plains Hospital?

A thorough appreciation of what Roy C. Ketcham did accomplish requires a figurative zoom-out for the panoramic view, which typically doesn't happen while held by the emotions of the moment. "This meant so much to them and they put so much into it, so the loss is devastating," baseball coach Pat Mealy said on June 14.

Stephen HaynesRockland/Westchester Journal NewsBINGHAMTON - Four Section 1 baseball teams are among the last standing in their respective classifications, each in pursuit and within reach of a state championship this weekend. Section champions Roy C. Ketcham, Fox Lane, Rye and Putnam Valley advanced through the regional rounds and will compete in the state semifinals on June 13 at venues throughout the Binghamton area. A victory would advance them to the state final the following day.

The brass ring is within reach for the four Section 1 baseball teams who earned themselves another week of the spring season. Fox Lane, Rye, Putnam Valley and Roy C. Ketcham have proven themselves to be among the crème de la crème, one of the last four teams standing in their respective classifications, and each need two more wins to capture a state championship.
