Cameron Monte Smith was ordered to serve a total of 25 years in federal prison for destroying two separate energy facilities in North and South Dakota. At his sentencing hearing Monday, he was also ordered to pay more than $2 million in restitution. The 50-year-old Canadian citizen pleaded guilty to the charges in September. What did he destroy? While pleading guilty in U.S. District Court, Smith admitted to shooting up an electricity substation near Ray, N.D., in May 2023.

A jury in Chautauqua County, New York, on Friday found the New Jersey-born Hadi Matar guilty of the attempted murder of bestselling author Salman Rushdie as well as the assault of another man injured in the attack. Matar rushed a stage in Chautauqua, New York, where Rushdie was speaking in 2022, stabbing the author and another man who was on the stage.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday reacted in shock to the kidnapping and murder of 28-year-old rabbi Zvi Kogan in the United Arab Emirates. Kogan was a member of the Chabad-Lubavitch group of Orthodox Jews and held dual citizenship in Moldova and Israel. He went missing on Thursday. Two Iranian soldiers died in the attacks, according to a report by the state-run media outlet, IRNA. Israeli conducted military strikes in Tehran, the southwestern province of Khuzestan and the western province of Ilam, IRNA reported. SCOTUS denies White House lawsuit over new Title IX rule

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday denied the Biden administration’s request to begin partial implementation of its controversial new rule interpreting Title IX, the landmark women’s rights law, after lower courts in 25 states put it on hold. The court’s 5-4 ruling means that the new regulations remain completely on hold in about half of the country. The White House had sought temporary stays allowing some parts of its new rule to take effect while legal challenges played out at lower courts.
