In the fall, longtime local music fans had reason to rejoice with respect to the single “Cutting Ties,” the first new music in a long time from Matt Pelham, frontman of Middle Tennessee rock heroes The Features. Setting aside the posthumous release of The Mahaffey Sessions 1999, Pelham has been relatively quiet since The Features amicably dissolved in 2016, following a two-decade roller-coaster ride through the music biz.

Songsmith Jason Isbell and his formidable band The 400 Unit’s annual residency at the Ryman has become one of Music City’s best-loved (relatively) recent traditions. This year’s installment marks the 10th running of Isbell and company’s Mother Church homecoming. While the conditions that seemingly make it more difficult than ever to operate an independent music venue have not changed, one piece of Nashville’s indie venue ecosystem is holding fast. Venerable show space 3rd and Lindsley, in operation in the same former restaurant just south of Broadway since 1991, has signed a new five-year lease extension. Word came in 2022 that a construction project that would displace the venue was in the planning stages.

Nashville Pride is headed back to Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park this year, bringing an even bigger and better entertainment lineup with more than 130 performers on deck. It expands out from the traditional Saturday and Sunday schedule to include a kickoff concert Friday night, June 27, headlined by pop star Kim Petras, making her return to the fest following a rain-drenched (but no less exciting) performance in 2021. She’ll be joined by Empress of, Estelle and drag queen supreme Kylie Love.
