With the Little League regular season essentially wrapped up across the local District 16 and 31 leagues, the focus shifts to the all-star tournaments. That's when teams begin the climb to win district titles, advance to sectionals and in some instances state tournaments. Between softball and baseball, some of the up and coming talent the local high school coaches hope one day to have on their rosters, have the time to showcase their abilities.

There’s a reason sports fans in Northeast Pennsylvania had to ask what “Ace” Brogna’s first name really is. Because if he walked in your gym, on your football field wearing the white hat or was standing in your dugout coaching high school or college baseball, you knew you had one of the best. For the record, Brogna’s first name is Alex. But nobody needed to call him that.

ASHLAND — When he walked off the mound at the end of the top of the first inning, MMI Prep starting pitcher Tommy Horvat didn’t need words of encouragement, just a few reminders to get back to what he had been doing up to this point of the season that helped MMI Prep get to the PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals. Find his rhythm, throw strikes and trust the defense. That proved to be the perfect formula for the righthander.

With a district championship on the line and a spot in the state playoffs hanging in the balance, Pittston Area right-hander Elijah Barr picked the right time to have one of his most dominating pitching performances of the season. In the Class 5A district final, Barr tossed a complete-game, two-hitter and struck out three in Pittston Area’s 3-1 victory over Abington Heights. The win clinched the district championship for the Patriots. He also helped his own cause at the plate with a pair of hits.
