    BRUSSELS — The European Union on Thursday announced a plan to ramp up the pressure on the United States in hopes of prodding the Trump administration toward serious trade negotiations. The European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, announced two major steps that it could take to hit back. Officials laid out 95 billion euros ($107 billion) worth of goods that they could target with higher tariffs in retaliation for the duties the U.S. has announced or imposed.

    County Council approved a $600 million economic development plan Tuesday that aims to revitalize an industrial site in Pittsburgh’s North Side, a project recently OK’d by Pittsburgh’s school board. The Transit Revitalization Investment District, or TRID, is a funding mechanism to support almost $54 million in infrastructure upgrades for the $600 million Esplanade development in Manchester.

    NEW YORK — The U.S. trade deficit soared to a record $140.5 billion in March as consumers and businesses alike tried to get ahead of President Donald Trump's latest and most sweeping tariffs — with federal data showing an enormous stockpiling of pharmaceutical products. The deficit — which measures the gap between the value of goods and services the U.S. sells abroad against what it buys — has roughly doubled over the last year.
