TORONTO — Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday he will impose new tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum imports on July 21, depending on the progress of trade talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. Mr. Carney, who met with Trump at the Group of Seven meetings in Alberta this week, reiterated Thursday that Canada and the U.S. "agreed to pursue negotiations toward a deal within the coming 30 days."“We will review our response as the negotiations progress,” Mr. Carney said.

Retail sales fell sharply in May as consumers pulled back from a spending surge early this year to get ahead of President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on nearly all imports. Sales at retail stores and restaurants dropped 0.9% in May, the Commerce Department said Tuesday, after a decline of 0.1% in April. The figure was pulled down by a steep drop in auto sales, after Americans ramped up their car-buying in March to get ahead of Trump’s 25% duty on imported cars and car parts.

A year and a half after a deal between Japan’s Nippon Steel Corp. and U.S. Steel was announced, Nippon said Friday evening that it had signed a national security agreement put forward by the U.S. government — the last obstacle in its $14.9 billion takeover of the Pittsburgh-based company. The path to approval was winding and constantly shifting.

The family of a man who died in the Allegheny County Jail’s custody in September 2023 has filed a federal lawsuit against jail and Allegheny Health Network officials, claiming lack of adequate medical treatment led to his death. Damages, if the family wins, could amount to millions of dollars. Zachary Sahm, of Glasgow, was arrested and put into custody of the Allegheny County Jail in September 2023, where he tested positive for fentanyl and heroin use, the lawsuit stated.
