May 8—Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. was named chairman of the South Texas Alliance of Cities in a unanimous vote during the organization's quarterly meeting on April 25 in San Antonio. STAC, established in 2023 and dedicated to addressing issues facing the region, furthering regional cooperation and advancing the region's shared priorities, is made up of mayors from the cities of Harlingen, Weslaco, Edinburg, McAllen, Mission, Laredo, Corpus Christi and San Antonio in addition to Brownsville.

Apr. 28—Proposed legislation that would have given SpaceX control over closures of Boca Chica Beach and S.H. 4 has died in the Texas Legislature. Listen instead Food manufacturer Westa Inc., the first tenant of the Port of Brownsville’s new 118-acre business park, said it is finalizing the layout for a state-of-the-art wheat flour mill and storage silos at the site. Westa, with corporate offices in Miami and Toronto, said it will invest $20 million in the facilities, to be located on more than 10 acres within the park at the turning basin of the Brownsville Ship Channel.

Alliance Action Sports Experts, a company based in Austria, has designed and built more than 200 bicycle "pump tracks" across Europe but never in the U.S. - until now. Cameron County, specifically Pedro "Pete" Benavides Park just east of the Brownsville city limits at the end of California Road, is the site of the firm's first U.S. project, which is nearing completion. It's only the second pump track in the Rio Grande Valley.
