It started with a call from an unknown number with a Houston area code. When real estate agent René Flores didn't answer, he says he got a voicemail. “The voicemail is to inform you that Spectrum is removing a 40% discount offer on your monthly bill. To reactivate this offer right now, please call back on the number you see on your caller I.D.,” the voicemail stated. “I said, ‘so they're removing? Let me look into that,’” Flores said.

As someone with more than four decades of experience with livestock, a Mercedes rancher said it’s rare for someone to lose their lives to livestock. Teo Martinez, who is also known as the Hidalgo County Cowboy, said he got a call on Monday night about a jersey bull who may have killed its owner in the Donna area. “This is my third time I see people die from that,” Martinez said.

Nearly 175 foster children in Edinburg are getting a little extra help to prepare for their upcoming school year. The non-profit organization Court-Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, held their first ever back to school event to provide supplies and shoes to children. The goal of the event was to help the children in the CASA program, and their foster parents. “They work really hard to give these kids what they can,” CASA worker Nicole Blanco said.

A real estate broker says many first time home buyers are not prepared for the higher prices, especially in Hidalgo County. Smart Asset, a financial tech company, recently ranked Hidalgo County second in a list of Texas counties with the biggest jump in home prices over a five-year period. Brian Reed, a real estate broker at Ryan and Brian Real Estate in McAllen, says the real estate market in the Rio Grande Valley is still feeling the effects of the pandemic.

Traffic delays are expected in the city of McAllen on Ware Road and Military Highway following a diesel spill, according to a news release from the city. The spill happened Friday at around 1 p.m.The westbound lanes of Military Highway are closed in the area after a semi-tractor trailer ruptured, spilling approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel on the roadway, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release. Multiple agencies are at the scene attempting to clear the roadway.
