It started with a call from an unknown number with a Houston area code. When real estate agent René Flores didn't answer, he says he got a voicemail. “The voicemail is to inform you that Spectrum is removing a 40% discount offer on your monthly bill. To reactivate this offer right now, please call back on the number you see on your caller I.D.,” the voicemail stated. “I said, ‘so they're removing? Let me look into that,’” Flores said.

As someone with more than four decades of experience with livestock, a Mercedes rancher said it’s rare for someone to lose their lives to livestock. Teo Martinez, who is also known as the Hidalgo County Cowboy, said he got a call on Monday night about a jersey bull who may have killed its owner in the Donna area. “This is my third time I see people die from that,” Martinez said.
Foster children in Edinburg to receive school supplies through nonprofit

Nearly 175 foster children in Edinburg are getting a little extra help to prepare for their upcoming school year. The non-profit organization Court-Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, held their first ever back to school event to provide supplies and shoes to children. The goal of the event was to help the children in the CASA program, and their foster parents. “They work really hard to give these kids what they can,” CASA worker Nicole Blanco said.
Hidalgo County ranked second in Texas counties with biggest home value growth

A real estate broker says many first time home buyers are not prepared for the higher prices, especially in Hidalgo County. Smart Asset, a financial tech company, recently ranked Hidalgo County second in a list of Texas counties with the biggest jump in home prices over a five-year period. Brian Reed, a real estate broker at Ryan and Brian Real Estate in McAllen, says the real estate market in the Rio Grande Valley is still feeling the effects of the pandemic.
Lane closure in effect in McAllen following diesel spill

Traffic delays are expected in the city of McAllen on Ware Road and Military Highway following a diesel spill, according to a news release from the city. The spill happened Friday at around 1 p.m.The westbound lanes of Military Highway are closed in the area after a semi-tractor trailer ruptured, spilling approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel on the roadway, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release. Multiple agencies are at the scene attempting to clear the roadway.
Primera breaks ground on nearly $10 million municipal complex

Primera city leaders are on a mission to grow by expanding their city offices. A groundbreaking was held Wednesday for a $10 million municipal complex that will house the city’s headquarters. Currently, all the city departments work out of the same small building. The fire and police chiefs don’t even have an office of their own, and there are no jail cells.
DHR Health patient undergoes first epilepsy surgery completed in the Valley

Nearly two months after the first of its kind surgery in the region, a DHR Health patient has been seizure free. Dante Enriquez, 24, underwent a groundbreaking surgery to treat his epilepsy on June 12, according to a DHR Health news release. “How many seizures I had a day… from the beginning it was every day — sometimes every hour or every couple of minutes,” Enriquez said during a Tuesday news conference.

Teach for America Rio Grande Valley says before students go back, there are a few things parents can do to help ease the transition. The first is establishing a routine. The routine includes enforcing bedtimes and waking children up around the time they'll need to be up for school. Limit screen time before bed and in the morning to help children get a better night's rest, and keep their minds focused.
New transition program facility for Sharyland ISD students with special needs breaks ground

Students at Sharyland Independent School District with special needs will soon have a facility to attend after graduation. The district broke ground Monday on their 18+ Transition Program facility that will be located next to Garza Elementary School. The facility will offer a college-like experience. Students will learn life skills, soft skills, job training and more.
DHR Health brings wheelchairs for disabled athletes in the Valley

Several DHR Health patients got to try out wheelchairs made specifically for playing basketball. DHR Health announced the creation of a new wheelchair basketball team back in June. Ten wheelchairs were bought by the health system thanks to funding and grants. The equipment will help make it easier for disabled athletes to get around the court.
