(WAVY) — The spring season is home to some wacky weather, especially here in Hampton Roads, and it helps to think of the spring as less of a season and more of a transition. We are transitioning from winter being cold to summer being hot — winter’s specific tuning; cold, summer’s specific tuning; hot. In the atmosphere, our jet stream is the general flow of weather from west to east. In the winter, its specific tuning (or position) is farther south, giving us access to colder air to our north.

After Thursday evenings’ rainfall, a roller coaster ride of temperatures gets pushed into motion and our temperatures over the next five or six days simply go down, then up, then back down then head back up before crashing back down…. The stubborn clouds and gloomy conditions are hanging on through our Saturday morning… but we’re still hopeful that afternoon sunshine will bring in some warmth for the weekend. Expect fog, mist and drizzle through mid morning, as clouds stick around through late morning. Temperatures will be pinned in the 50s through the late morning, but once we get the sunshine by early afternoon highs will accelerate into the 60s and close to 70°.

The salty ocean air has moved into Hampton Roads and taken over with cool, cloudy and gloomy conditions. What’s a bummer, or what may make you salty about it, is that this set up takes time to clear, so we’ll be stuck in the clouds for most of Friday. Well that warm spring like weather from earlier this week just got absolutely shut down by this cool, salty ocean air. Once the northeast breeze developed off the cold Chesapeake Bay & Atlantic Ocean, the marine layer developed and we’ve been stuck in the clouds since. A few spots have seen some clearing here or there, but today we’ll struggle to see some sunshine. Especially with some lowered visibility, mist and drizzle through the morning hours.
