Light the Hoan will begin work to add lights to the east side of the iconic Milwaukee bridge this month, so that both sides of the span will be illuminated. The new lights won’t only be visible to boaters and ships out on Lake Michigan, but also to folks along much of the lakefront, including from Veterans Park, Lakeshore State Park, Discovery World, the Summerfest grounds, South Shore Park and more.

As we take stock of the next generation of civic leaders in Milwaukee, it’s important to make note of a rather interesting and promising trend: For the first time in history, the mayor, police chief, the county executive, the county sheriff, the Common Council president and the superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools have at least one thing in common: They’re people of color. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson was elected in 2022. Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley was elected in 2020.

They say that bridge politics make for strange bedfellows. But last night’s announcement from an unlikely coalition that hopes to remove the lights from Hoan Bridge raised eyebrows among civic leaders and private citizens alike, who are befuddled as to why these groups would unite to turn back the clock … to a time before electricity.
