CARSON CITY — On one side of the Nevada State Capitol grounds, Carson City residents on Saturday morning expressed their rights against the federal government. On the other side at Veterans Plaza, several hundred people honored both the evolution of the U.S. flag and the Army’s 250th birthday. That fact wasn’t lost on Flag Day’s speaker, Brig. Gen. D. Rodger Waters, the state’s adjutant general, who talked about the historical significance of honoring both national institutions.

Women Veterans Recognition Day on June 12 honored the service, sacrifice and bravery of women who have served in the military. The day recognizes the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, which secured a place for women in the U.S. military and offered them opportunities for long-term careers.

The Nevada National Guard is hosting its 27th annual Flag Day ceremony and a birthday celebration for the U.S. Army as the nation’s oldest military service marks its 250th birthday. Founded in June 1925, the Fallon Rotary Club has weathered time with its members volunteering in all aspects of community outreach from raising money for community programs to helping fellow residents.
