While the snow totals in the Sierra Nevada don’t match the measurements from the past two years, the latest Nevada Water Supply Outlook indicates Northern Nevada and the Carson River watershed remain in good shape, according to the latest measurements. The April SNOTELS (snow telemetry) readings in the basins show 94-103% in the Sierra Basins and upward to 155% of normal across Northern Nevada, reports the Natural Resource Conservation Service.
WNC reception showcases high school students' art

A student display of various art had a community reception Thursday at Western Nevada College’s Fallon campus. Entitled “Whisperings of the Nevada Desert,” the exhibit primarily features paintings and other pieces depicting Nevada’s culture. The exhibit will be available for public viewing through April 21 followed by another exhibit featuring WNC students. Amanda Hammond, an art teacher at Churchill County High School, said a showcase of her students’ art hasn’t been done before at WNC.

Shane Tanner immersed himself not only in the local community, but also in his duties as a naval officer. When he reported in March 2022 to what the Navy calls that hidden jewel in the Nevada desert, Tanner rolled up his sleeves, set out to improve the quality of life for the sailors assigned to the air station and became a familiar face at numerous events in the Lahontan Valley.

FFA, 4-H students promote livestock show

Members of the county’s 4-H and FFA programs drummed up interest for the Churchill County Junior Livestock Show by attending lunch last week with the Fallon Rotary Club and the Fallon Chamber of Commerce. Although many activities are planned in conjunction with the livestock show, the main dates are April 4 and April 24-26. Members of the Grange, 4-H and FFA and independent students will Walk the Town next week to promote the show, and at the end of the month, they will show their animals.

Bagpipes and drums broke the Saturday morning serenity behind Fallon City Hall. A small group of veterans, specifically those from the Vietnam War era, gathered to pay respects to comrades who died in the nation’s longest war in a land more than 10,000 miles away. March 29 is designated as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Local organizations volunteered their time.
Michael Haymon assumes command of NAS Fallon

FALLON — Capt. Michael Haymon became the 35th commander of Naval Air Station Fallon in Friday’s change of command ceremony by succeeding Capt. Shane Tanner, the incoming chief of staff for Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, located at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. Vice Adm. Scott Gray, commander of the Navy Installations Command and keynote speaker, and Rear Adm. Brad Rosen, commander of Navy Region Southwest, also attended the hour-long ceremony at Hangar 7.
