Reno, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — RENO, Nev. — A judge sentenced Christopher McDougal, 35, to 30 days in jail for hitting and killing federal judge Larry Hicks in a crosswalk last year. McDougal, who was driving a 2000 Ford Excursion with a lifted suspension, apologized to the victim's family before learning his fate. Hicks, a respected figure, served over 50 years in the legal community, most recently as a United States District Court judge. He was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2001.

Carson City, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — Following a deadly crash on U.S. 50 earlier this month, discussions have intensified regarding the potential safety benefits of installing a median barrier on the heavily traveled four-lane road connecting Carson City to Lake Tahoe. The crash on March 20 involved a wrong-way driver, later arrested for DUI and vehicular homicide resulted in one death and three injuries, according to state troopers.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — 5,500 kids are being cut from Nevada's Child Care Development Program after COVID money ran out. The federal grant won't cover the 13,000 kids under the program anymore. The Child Care and Development Program allows families to receive subsidies for child care if their income allows. The state says new applicants have to fall at or below 41% the state median income. Renewal applications are evaluated at 49% state median income.
