AbstractThe spread of misinformation through media and social networks threatens many aspects of society, including public health and the state of democracies. One approach to mitigating the effect of misinformation focuses on individual-level interventions, equipping policymakers and the public with essential tools to curb the spread and influence of falsehoods. Here we introduce a toolbox of individual-level interventions for reducing harm from online misinformation.

If you do carry those assumptions in the same way I do, you may find it odd that a defense technology think tank has transformed itself into a lifestyle blog for the CIA. Although they shade this article under the guise of speculation, this seems very much the opposite of secrecy. They’ve started with a “manufactured” day-in-the-life post from the perspective of a “fictional” analyst who is using AI to augment her workspace.

The two big pieces of my analysis here hinge on action and decision theory, quite plainly. How do I decide when to do something, and what is the motivation for that action. The determinists that I decry on such a regular basis (Sam Harris and Brene Brown, primarily) would assert that ultimately it’s not up to me. That the decisions are made by forces in the environment around me acting upon me which I then react to in ways that I have learned to. It’s a load of horse crap, quite plainly.

Günter Albers/AdobeWhy is there a deluge of divisive and negative content on social media? Is it simply that — despite what we’d prefer to think about ourselves — we like this kind of stuff? After all, research suggests that negativity — especially about our political opponents — is likeliest to go viral online. Maybe the basic explanation is that everyone wants to see content that reinforces their political biases and makes their enemies look bad.
