At Crewe’s train station, there is still a plaque near Platform 3 that reads ‘Crewe -destination HS2‘. It was a devastating blow to Crewe, a town steeped in railway heritage that was expecting HS2 to deliver major economic regeneration.

Rail passengers do not “need” Trainline and its soaring profits should be invested in cutting fares instead, campaigners have said. Victims of a second scandal at the Post Office have waited more than 30 years to be compensated for wrongful prosecutions and lost livelihoods linked to IT faults – but are still waiting for the Treasury to sign payments off. A compensation scheme for sub-postmasters believed to have lost money while using Capture – a basic Post Office accounting system rolled out to branches in the 1990s before the notorious Horizon programme – has finally been agreed with the Government.

The post-mortem on Labour's election drubbing is now playing into all decisions - including what to do about HS2. @connor_naismith argues the government must have something to offer places in the North like Crewe or risk people turning to Reform. https://t.co/yzWutNI7ky

Absolute fools - why they didn't just cough up from the start is beyond me. Hope the court doesn't even think about custody, just make them plant trees for the rest of their days https://t.co/YsL9AZLRZ3

Fascinating, if also very dispiriting, comments from Lou Haigh here.
