Recently, I tested a semi-auto waterfowl shotgun that costs around $500. It’s a clone of a popular Italian shotgun. It hit where I pointed, ate just about any duck load, and dropped birds like any shotgun I’ve ever shot. There’s a black version of the same gun for around $400, making this autoloading shotgun the same or cheaper than many new pump-action shotguns out there. This begs the question, is the pump gun dead? Over-unders and side-by-sides will always have a place on an upland hunt.

Deer camps embody some of the best things about hunting, especially community. Some of my favorite hunting memories include my grandfather’s hunting camp, where I rabbit hunted, learned how to deer hunt, and heard my first turkey gobble. Aside from hunting and work days, members of the camp often gathered for fish fries, cookouts, and community events. Hunters killed big bucks every year, and every now and then, someone would kill a really big deer.

Six Louisiana men were arrested last week and slapped with 19 felonies and nine misdemeanors for allegedly cheating at two recent hog hunting contests in the Bayou State. The men trapped the hogs at a landfill in Texas, brought them back to pens in Louisiana, and staged photos to make it look like they’d caught them for contests in Bienville and Caldwell Parishes, officials say. They took home the top prizes at both contests. “The complaint was that they had hunted in Texas.

On January 20, Gaige Zook and Jackson Harbor went out for a duck hunt on the Platte River near Torrington, Wyoming. They took along Maurizio Justiniano, an unlicensed hunter who wanted to learn more about waterfowling. Tragically, Justiniano will never get the chance to take Hunter’s Ed or shoot a bird on the wing because he took a fatal shot to the gut in the blind that day.

In Kentucky, the Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) is finalizing a ban on hog hunting following a vote by the state’s commission in December. According to the agency, hunting is working against eradication and trapping efforts by educating wild pigs, making them nocturnal and dispersing them across the landscape.
