The Missouri Legislature has passed a wide-ranging court-related bill. The bill would allow mental health treatment courts as an alternative to resolve cases that stem from any mental health disorders of criminal defendants. Another provision would raise the mileage rate for citizens who serve jury duty from the current seven-cents per mile to 65-and-a-half-cents per mile.

A southwest Missouri lawmaker is joining the Trump Administration. President Trump has chosen Neosho State Representative Ben Baker as the state director for the USDA’s Rural Development Office. During a farewell to House members, Baker said he’s humbled to accept the job. “How in the world has this happened to me, where the President has the confidence in me to do this job in our state? That to me, has been the honor of my life,” he said.

The Missouri Legislature is scrambling to pass a state budget by Friday’s deadline. It is not uncommon for state lawmakers to flirt with the state budget deadline, but they are cutting it very close this time around. House and Senate negotiators met Wednesday night to compromise on what to fund, what not to fund, and how much to fund each budget item. Once negotiations wrap up, the House and Senate will work to pass their budget proposal.

The Missouri state budget is now in the state senate for debate. State senator Jill Carter telling Newstalk KZRG:“We have a $50 billion budget. I think some of the differences between the House and the senator is deficit spending and extending those tax cuts. And so that’s, I think, where a lot of the deliberation is happening. Also, the governor’s priorities, the House stripped a lot of those out. The Senate Appropriations Committee put a lot of those back in.

The city council getting a report from the Joplin Sports Authority director Jared Bruggerman on the impact from the recent NJCAA championship played at Missouri Southern.
