    A one-year-old child was killed and a Joplin woman suffered minor injuries in a crash on I-49 at the 16.2 mile marker about a mile south of Goodman at 5:55 p.m. on Saturday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the crash occurred as southbound traffic had stopped due to an animal in the roadway. A 2012 Honda Accord, driven by a 22-year-old woman from Joplin, struck a towed unit attached to a 2025 Freightliner Cascadia from the rear. The one-year-old was pronounced dead at a Neosho hospital.

    The Joplin City Council will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, May 5th in regular session in Council Chambers in City Hall at 602 S. Main Street in Joplin. Items on the agenda include a cooperative agreement between the City of Joplin and the Economic Security Corporation for the provision of lower income housing. The Economic Security Corporation has acquired the property located at 2008 S. Sergeant Avenue, also known as the Old Freeman Hospital.

    Girard, Kansas Police Chief Sierra Roberts has left her post. The City reportedly has already interviewed candidates for the job. Girard recently hired two full-time experienced police officers and plan to hire more at the next regularly scheduled meeting of the Council. The Police Chief position was posted on April 28th. Interviews for the Police Chief position will begin within a few days.

    On May 3, 2025 at approximately 01:44, emergency personnel were alerted to a crash with unknown injuries in the area of 14th and Military in Mulberry. Deputies with the Sheriff’s Office, along with Mulberry Fire and EMS responded to the scene, assisted by the Arma and Arcadia Police Departments. Upon arrival, a UTV was located with a single occupant. Evidence from the scene showed that the UTV was traveling westbound and had left the roadway and struck a tree.
