Wilmington relentless in toppling Coal City

COAL CITY – Monday’s Illinois Central Eight showdown of its top two teams Wilmington and Coal City started a few minutes early. As it turned out Wilmington was more than eager to get started. Wilmington’s first batter of the game, Ryan Kettman, swatted a home run to start off a 15-hit Wildcat attack and Lucas Rink limited Coal City to just two hits in a near complete game as the Wildcats rolled to a 9-0 victory.

FRANKFORT – There didn’t seem to be a lot of warning that a Lincoln-Way East rally was in the cards on Monday afternoon. Lincoln-Way West starter Connor Essenburg cruised for the first five innings and the Griffins were down by four runs with just two more chances to produce some offense.

LOCKPORT – Sometimes the first inning can set the tone for an entire game. But other times what happens in the first inning bears no resemblance to what happens the rest of the way. The latter was what happened in Thursday afternoon’s WJOL Tournament quarterfinal game between Lockport and Joliet West. The teams both struggled to execute offensively and defensively, and the wild first frame ended with seven runs combined crossing the plate, despite just three total hits.

FRANKFORT – Lincoln-Way East’s Matthew Safarik was sent to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with a job to do. Quite frankly, he didn’t do that job. So he decided he’d better do one better than that after failing on his first attempt. Minooka’s Braydon Zilis swatted one of those scant hits in the bottom of the seventh inning pushing across the winning run in a 2-1 Minooka walk-off victory. “I mean, it was just putting a bat to the barrel, you’ve got to put it in play,' Zilis said.
