Fifty-four people in the USA died due to Ivan, which off the coast of Florida produced a 91-foot wave, the largest ever recorded. Twenty billion dollars in damage and untold sorrow.

Why have nations around the world, and communities in the USA, declared July 2023 “Plastic Free July?” What exactly are plastics? Why should folks in Western North Carolina care about this at all?
