But that’s exactly what happened to amateur jumper rider Alex Alston at the Upperville Colt and Horse Show (Virginia) when his horse’s butterfly bit broke over the second-to-last fence in the first round of the 1.45-meter Show Jumping Hall of Fame Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic.

When your nickname is “Ducky,” odds are everyone’s going to buy you duck-themed items, because of course. And the team at Aaron Vale’s Thinkslikeahorse has happily leaned into the theme when it comes to his current top grand prix horse and partner for this week’s Longines League of Nations Ocala, Carissimo 25, better known as “Ducky” in the barn. Ducky got his nickname from the collection of rubber ducks that live on the dashboard of owner Debbie Smith’s Jeep.

When Belgian show jumper Emilie Conter and her partner Portobella Van De Fruitkorf landed from the last in-and-out and headed to the final fence in Saturday’s jump-off for the $500,000 Bainbridge Companies CSI5* Grand Prix, Conter started to press the mare forward but then paused. “I wanted to see if I should take the leave-out to the final fence,” Conter said. “And suddenly I heard my trainer Helena Stormanns yell, ‘Go get it!’ and then I saw the long [distance].

Caroline Pamukcu is used to being on the go, having competed 18 horses 93 times from beginner novice to advanced in 2024. But she left the show scene in October, as she and her husband Deniz Pamukcu prepared for a new chapter of their life: parenthood. The couple welcomed daughter Blake Pamukcu, who shares a name with Caroline’s Paris Olympic mount HSH Blake, on Jan. 29. “I’ve always wanted to have a family, and I’ve always been super close with my family,” Caroline said.

After declaring that he was not going to go fast on Chin Tonic HS in Saturday’s final cross-country phase of the $100,000 Stirling Venture Capital Grand-Prix Eventing Showcase at Bruce’s Field in Aiken, South Carolina, Will Coleman changed his mind and went for it. As the final rider to go in the class and the leader after Friday’s show jumping and dressage phases, Coleman had a healthy 21-second cushion that did not require him to speed around.

It’s been a busy day for Molly Pellegrini. She and her husband, Hank Pellegrini, 55, were supposed to fly from Philadelphia to Alabama to watch their son Will, 22, play in a college tennis match. However, the couple, married 27 years, had their flight delayed and then rerouted to Atlanta. They missed the tennis match, so Pellegrini was revising their travel plans. They’d rent a car and drive from Atlanta to Auburn University in Alabama, where Will was playing in another match the next day.

When 11-year-old Savanna Springfield and her pony Candy Crush entered the ring for their second round at the ExEL Winter Wonderland Show in Germantown, Tennessee, last December, she had more on her mind than just the order of her fences. The show was the first major outing for “Candy” in almost a year, after a hock injury had left her sidelined for months, but—uncharacteristically—the pony had refused several jumps in their first round, and they were unable to finish the course.
