(WMBF) - A beloved firefighter is speaking out about his ongoing battle with stage 4 colon cancer as the community across two states rallies around him. “I started thinking that there’s so much more that I wish I had done in fifty years,” Donnie Strickland, Tabor City firefighter, said. A realization, the 30+ year Tabor City firefighter said he had when his doctor told him he had stage four cancer.

LORIS, S.C. (WMBF) - The community of Loris reflected on Tuesday on the life of a man who not only owned a business for decades, but also made an impact on the place he called home. “He did love Loris and he supported it wholeheartedly,” James Edwards said. Words describing the late David Conner, or as he was more commonly known, ‘Shorty.’ Conners grew up about 12 miles outside of Loris and dropped out of school in middle school.

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – Florence County deputies made a gruesome discovery during an investigation near Lake City. The sheriff’s office said what began as a missing persons case out of Brunswick County, N.C., turned into a death investigation. “It’s something like out of a horror movie. Very horrific,” Florence County Sheriff TJ Joye said. Loved ones reported Christy Ward and Charles Antwine Jr. missing from the home in Brunswick County last week.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - Both protesters and counter-protesters spoke out on Saturday during multiple ‘No Kings’ protests held in the Grand Strand. Crowds gathered and chanted in the Grand Strand and the Pee Dee during a nationwide series of ‘No Kings Day’ protests. There were two separate protests held in Myrtle Beach and one in Florence.

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Some boaters and boating captains in Horry County are hoping for stricter certification requirements for folks learning how to operate a boat or watercraft. Boats firing up and hitting the water are a familiar sight and sound during this time of year in the Grand Strand. Captain Chris Ossmann said things can get tense with so many people out on the waters. “It’s almost like the wild west out there. You gotta be careful,” Ossmann said.
