Catching a simple cold can be life-threatening for 10-year-old Oakley Elliott. It can put her in an intensive care unit for weeks. Not due to the cold itself, but because it's a trigger for her complex asthma. "First, I get a cough, then I get tight in the chest because I struggle to breathe. I feel scared because I don't want to go to hospital," she said. Sometimes Oakley's asthma has been so bad she's been airlifted to Melbourne for emergency treatment.

A public health expert says the issue needs to be taken as seriously as silica and asbestos exposure. The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union (AMWU) says stricter regulations around welding must be fast tracked.
