Empirical evidence has demonstrated the complex, multifactorial nature of obesity,1Foresight. Tackling obesities: future choices–project report. 2007. where the causes and manifestations of obesity vary from individual-to-individual and thus, there is no one cause or combination of factors that may lead to obesity. As such, we suggest that obesity becomes pluralised (i.e., obesities) to reflect the diverse drivers and manifestations of excess adiposity.

BMI is a calculation of height and weight to identify a person's weight status. BMI is calculated by a person's weight in kilograms (or pounds) divided by the square of height in metres (or feet). The BMI ranges are underweight (<18·5 kg/m), healthy weight (18·5–24·9 kg/m), overweight (25·0–29·9 kg/m), and obese (≥30 kg/m). National Health Service (NHS) England have a BMI calculator that requires demographic information to be entered: height, weight, age, sex, ethnicity, and activity level.
