Sport is a vital part of who we are, how others see us, and – these days – a low-risk, low-cost and high-profile diplomatic tool in an increasingly divisive geopolitical landscape.

    1 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The ambitions of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in 2015, are laid out in 17 goals called the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs take a holistic approach to health and well-being and provide a roadmap for reducing poverty and inequality by promoting global partnerships. Among these goals are the right to education, health, and the pursuit of economic growth, while also aiming to tackle the climate crisis (United Nations, 2022).
