This month I’m going to digress from my baby boomer theme and speak to the whole community. Memorial Day was recently observed in this country, so I want to speak to you about my experience as a mother of three soldiers and being the daughter of a World War II survivor. War is hell, even for the family members left at home when their soldier goes off to war. Flashback: It’s 2004 and two of my three sons are fighting in a war — one in Iraq, the other in Afghanistan.

Welcome to Spring, and since Mother’s Day is just two weeks away, I’m going to focus on grandmothers. Whether you are a baby boomer or Generation X, Y or Zer, you have a grandmother somewhere. Well, my grandmother was my Shero. During a walk in the park recently I watched a young mother pushing her toddler on the swings, and my thoughts reverted to days of long ago when it was me pushing my child on a swing after a long day’s work. I remember wanting to give him everything the world had to offer.

The unrecognized war — a conflict, according to the government — was fought in Vietnam between 1955 and 1975. These were turbulent times in America, too, not just in Vietnam. While our soldiers were fighting to keep communism from spreading, the streets of America were battle grounds for equal rights; anti-war sentiments were broadcast every night from radio and TV news stations. Many of our soldiers came home to ridicule and hostility, but did their best to fit back into society.

Loneliness is an insidious disease. It is an anti-discriminatory disorder that afflicts people of all ages, races, and creeds. It probably contributes to more deaths each year than all other diseases combined, yet they haven’t manufactured a drug capable of curing it. There are a lot of imitation cures out there in the form of antidepressants and mood-altering drugs that mask the symptoms, but what is the real remedy? It afflicts many regardless of their social status.
