    At least a couple dozen Massachusetts-based staff will go on administrative leave as part of the federal Department of Education's massive workforce cuts announced by the Trump administration Tuesday. The department is eliminating roughly 1,300 positions, slashing the agency in half and effectively eliminating entire units, according to a press release sent by the agency Tuesday evening.

    Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell and seven other state attorneys general sued the U.S. Department of Education and its top official Thursday to challenge recent cuts to grant funding for K-12 teacher preparation programs nationwide. The programs were authorized by Congress to recruit and train teachers for hard-to-staff subject areas in rural and urban communities, and to provide teachers and principals the opportunity to serve in underserved districts.
