Following the announcements, student names started to reappear on the Student and Exchange Visitor Information Systems, or SEVIS, a database controlled by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency that allows students and schools to track immigration standings. Many affected individuals said they were not notified when their legal status was revoked, and Friday's reversal followed a similarly opaque process. ICE has not revealed which students would be restored in the system — or why.

Harvard's lawsuit against the Trump administration Monday marked the latest turn in an escalating battle between the world's wealthiest university and the federal government. The school is suing to block the government from withholding more than $2 billion in federal funding by arguing the freeze is part of an unlawful effort to "coerce and control Harvard" and dictate its academic direction, according to court filings.

Several faculty groups at prominent universities, including Harvard, are suing the Trump administration over its recent efforts to arrest, detain or deport pro-Palestinian campus activists. In a lawsuit filed in federal district court in Boston Tuesday morning, the professor associations argue the government's policies have led to a "climate of fear" and chilled speech at higher education institutions across the country.

At least a couple dozen Massachusetts-based staff will go on administrative leave as part of the federal Department of Education's massive workforce cuts announced by the Trump administration Tuesday. The department is eliminating roughly 1,300 positions, slashing the agency in half and effectively eliminating entire units, according to a press release sent by the agency Tuesday evening.
