As the NHS nursing staff crisis continues, numbers in learning disability (LD) nursing have plummeted, with a 44% drop in LD nurses in the NHS in England between September 2009 and January 2024. We look at changes in university places offered and applications for the field, as well as numbers on the Nursing and Midwifery Council register – and how this compares to adult nurse numbers. Mandatory vaccination for nursing staff during the winter influenza season has long been a contentious issue. Vaccine uptake rates among front-line healthcare professionals have fallen since the pandemic, for both flu and COVID-19. We look at what the figures reveal about attitudes to vaccination among nursing staff and the impact of the COVID-19 programme on people’s views.
