INTRODUCTION Sarcoptic mange, caused by a burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei, occurs worldwide and has a large number of mammalian host species. As well as infecting numerous domestic animals, sarcoptic mange can infect wildlife (Pence & Ueckermann 2002). Compared to domestic animals, sarcoptic mange in wildlife is a particularly serious issue as they do not undergo regular treatments or come into regular contact with humans enabling intervention.
