Steel manufacturer ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS) India will set up three ferrous scrap processing centres in Hazira and Ahmedabad in Gujarat and in Khopoli in Maharashtra at a time of the country's decarbonisation efforts. The steelmaker is planning to invest 1bn rupees [$11.9mn] for the three centres that will process domestic industrial and end-of-life vehicle ferrous scrap, the company said.

India will not accept any unfair taxes or levies on steel that are imposed by the EU under the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), commerce minister Piyush Goyal said during the Indian Steel Association's Steel Conclave 2023. "We have taken it up with the EU. We are taking it up with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) very, very seriously," Goyal said on 7 November.

Tata Steel's announcement that was pulled at the last minute involved the idling of its hot strip mill in the coming months as well as its blast furnaces. The idling of the strip mill would leave Tata as an importer of hot-rolled coil (HRC), possibly from its Indian parent, that would be further processed into downstream products in the UK. In a conference call today announcing its latest results, Tata said it would import 2.5mn-2.6mn t to ensure a stable supply chain for its downstream unit.

Indian private-sector producer JSW Steel was declared on 11 October the preferred bidder for the Jaisinghpura North iron ore block in south India's Karnataka state. JSW offered the highest final price offer of 150.3pc of the value of mineral dispatched from the block, with estimated resources of 17.66mn t, in the state's auction held on 21 August. It had won the Jaisinghpura South iron ore block in an auction held in March.

Finished steel consumption last month rose by 18pc on the year to 11.2mn t, while production rose by 13pc to 10.9mn t, provisional data from the steel ministry's joint plant committee show.
