After the January wildfires, the county began a review to assess our evacuation policies and emergency alert systems. The state has also commissioned a review of our preparedness efforts, immediate response to the fires and the recovery time frame of the incident. The state is looking to local agencies to complete their own response and recovery assessment so we can inform their efforts.

Los Angeles County must continue to move its ethics reform work forward. There’s no question that public distrust in government runs deep. I’m committed to creating an independent Ethics Commission, Ethics Compliance Office and Ethics Officer as a first step. I introduced a motion, unanimously approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, at the meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24 with those goals in mind. Transparency and accountability don’t need to wait.

As scorching triple-digit temperatures engulf Los Angeles County throughout the weekend and excessive heat warnings have been issued for many communities in Los Angeles County’s Fifth District, I urge residents to do their part to lessen the threat of wildfires. Conditions are ripe for triggering a wildfires in our county, especially in the foothill and northern communities I represent. I’m calling on the public to please remain vigilant.
