DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Bitter-cold temperatures are making an appearance this week in North Texas. Monday has seen the coldest morning in North Texas since last February. Temperatures fell into the upper teens to low 20s with wind chills in the single digits. There's even a winter storm on our hands, starting late Wednesday evening through late Thursday night, according to our latest forecast.

A man who shot his mother's boyfriend Saturday night got arrested Sunday by Fort Worth police. 31-year-old Trace Hemphill shot and killed 51-year-old Byron Blackwell, his mother's boyfriend on Saturday night. According to investigators, Hemphill showed up at his mother's home on North Fork Road to do laundry. He had been kicked out of the house several weeks ago but his mom allowed him back in to do laundry.

Early voting for the May 4th election starts today across Texas and runs through Tuesday, April 30th. If you're planning to vote early remember to bring your ID to the polls. Texas allows 7 forms of ID to be used including a valid Texas Driver's license, Texas DPS election ID card, Texas handgun license, US Military ID, and a US passport. Election Day is Saturday May 4th.

The shelter is over capacity it is in desperate need of good homes for large breed dogs and adult cats. This is why they are urging the public they come meet some beautiful animals just waiting for the right home. Friends of Dallas Animal Services is offering a $50 Petco gift card to the first 100 people who adopt qualified pets between Friday and 6 p.m. Sunday.
1 dead after vehicle crash, causes major highway closure

Investigation continues after a deadly crash on Eastbound on 635. Police say the crash happened around one this morning. A woman was driving eastbound on 635 when she crashed into a construction barrier near the Skillman exit. Her car then veered back onto the highway where it came to a stop. The woman then got out of her car and was hit by a van. Investigators say the woman died at the scene. The driver of the van stayed on the scene and talked with police.
Police investigating how a student got a gun into a Dallas school

In Dallas, a high school student continues to recover after being shot last week while police try to figure out how someone got a gun into the school. With extra police on campus, students returned to Wilmer Hutchins High School today following a shooting Friday. Police say a 17-year-old student is in custody, accused of shooting another student in the leg. The victim is recovering. Police say it was a targeted attack but they are not saying what led to the shooting.
Texas oilman Herbert Hunt dies at age 95

Texas oilman Herbert Hunt has died. He was 95 years old. The Oil wildcatter left a massive business and philanthropic footprint in Dallas and Texas. Hunt became one of the world's most prominent oil barons and investors throughout his seven-decade career, following his father's lead along with brothers Nelson Hunt and Lamar Hunt. Herbert and Nelson Hunt are perhaps most well known for their attempt to corner the international market in silver.
Fort Worth ISD is named best community for music education, 11th award in a row

The National Association of Music Merchants Foundation names a Fort Worth ISD school with Best Communities for Music Education. This would be the 11th year in a row that the Fort Worth School District has won this award. The award demonstrates how Fort Worth ISD can provide music access and education to all students. The non-profit organization, NAMM Foundation, aims to promote music education and raise awareness of music's importance.

Former Richardson mayor Laura Maczka Jordan is now serving 6 years for bribery, tax fraud, and conspiracy at a medium-security prison near Tallahassee Florida. She was known as Laura Maczka when she was Mayor of Richardson and was convicted of federal corruption and bribery charges in 2021.

Mayor Eric Johnson announced Wednesday morning to appoint Mag Gabbert, Ph.D. as the new Poet Laureate for the City of Dallas. The Poet Laureate program is an initiative to raise awareness and appreciation of reading and writing poetry. Dr. Gabbert would work with the Dallas Public Library and the city's Office of Arts and Culture to bring initiatives to life. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Human-Centered Interdisciplinary Studies at SMU.
