Riley Grining was skippering a cruise around Tasmania's Macquarie Harbour on Sunday when he received a call to help stop a pod of pilot whales from stranding themselves on a beach. The night before, the remote wilderness area was lashed with high winds blowing at up to 74 kilometres per hour, but even still, Mr Grining said it was unusual to see the mostly offshore species within the shelter of the harbour.

Concept designs for a proposed $5 million ferry terminal upgrade at Bellerive have been released. The terminal will include indoor waiting areas, improved seating for a larger number of passengers, bicycle storage options and be fully accessible, artist impressions released on Sunday show.

The Tasmanian public is being asked to provide feedback on a cashless gaming system, in a bid to address problem gambling in the state. From late next year, all gamblers using an electronic gaming machine (EGM), or poker machine, in Tasmania will need to register to play. That means for the first time, players will be able to track their spend on gaming machines; an important step, advocates say, for minimising the harm to Tasmanians and their families that can result from problem gambling.

Sam Ralph says he felt a real sense of excitement when a sprawling green hub for his community was proposed three years ago. "When the City Heart was introduced, I felt proud to be a Clarence resident," he said. The urban green belt on Hobart's eastern shore is roughly one-and-a-half times the size of the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, and would create a network of walking paths and bike lanes that access the city's commercial and business hub at Rosny.
