Johnson's move to Des Moines stemmed from a summer 2020 visit where she cooked for her brother and his friends, who encouraged her to relocate and sell her food. After operating out of Merle Hay Mall and then her home, Johnson opened Joppa Experience in the River Bend neighborhood with community support and financial assistance.
