“Art is not eternal.” ― Tom WolfeWhen our boys were little, there were many construction projects, dirt offerings outside and buildings of blocks and of cards inside. None of those would be a permanent structure. The winds and rain and overzealous friends with boots took care of the outdoor masterpieces, and I needed surfaces indoors for other purposes, so I would request they deconstruct, or demolish, the buildings and start again. There might have been some tears.

It wasn’t until I was blowing off the debris one day that I saw how some of it had settled into … a crack. I suppose I could stop tidying up altogether, pretend the crack doesn’t exist, and save myself the trouble of noticing the things that need fixing. But once you see it, it’s hard to unsee.

He said she was perfectly healthy, and to let her cry out her crying spells,” my mother wrote on March 31, 1965. If Dr. Sanders could see me now … I wonder when I look at a lifetime of crying spells if better advice might have been to tell my mother it was OK to hold that little girl and comfort her and let her know she was safe.
