The Noise Who Runs Runs presents ‘Tune Out, Turn Off, Drop In’, their second single from the forthcoming EP ‘Come and Join the Beautiful Army’. This is a thumping piece of raw synth-pop, all fat chunky beats and circling keyboards with a thudding, insistent bass, inspired by the 1960s mantra that defined the Hippie counterculture espoused by Timothy Leary – “tune in, turn on, drop out”.

You can imagine the black bedecked members of bar italia hiding away in the Mallorca studio they recorded The Twits in, shutters closed, no lights on, horizontal slits of sun creating a barrier across the room, a mild February Balearic breeze drifting in, a broken spined, battered copy of Roald Dahl’s story about a revolting couple who hate the world and washing themselves opened face down on the floor, dust floating in the air. Not that the four members look unkempt.

That Natalie Merchant is performing on this stage tonight is a measure of her tremendous spirit and determination. Back in early 2020 and following emergency surgery for a degenerative spinal disease, Merchant found that she could no longer sing. A few months later she was bitten by a tick and started to develop sepsis. Hospitalisation ensued but helped greatly by her sheer strength of character, her health recovered and she eventually regained her singing voice.
