AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Homelessness is an ongoing issue in Augusta, so the city created the Homeless Task Force to break through the barriers holding people back. Under new leadership this year, the task force opened new mailboxes for those without a permanent address. And in a couple of weeks, they’re rolling out a program with one-time bus tickets for those who need to get from point A to point B.

They’re dealing with everything from overgrown grass to abandoned vehicles and homes that need to be demolished. City commissioners are debating adding more teeth to the blight ordinance.

Jada Hickman was 6 months old when she died 23 years ago. Her parents, Kamaron Hickman and Fatima Nettles, chose to have her buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta. At the beginning of 2024, they made the difficult decision to exhume and cremate her remains.

The Augusta Commission is rolling the rate back, while the Board of Education wants to increase it. The commission decided Tuesday on a rollback on millage rates. Under the new rates, there would be no change in the tax bill for a $200,00 house, according to documents presented at Tuesday’s Augusta Commission meeting.

(WRDW/WAGT) - Discussion over the annual Arts in the Heart of Augusta festival got contentious at Tuesday’s meeting of the Augusta Commission, with a community member asking city leaders to look into the festival. Brad Owens said the issue was brought to his doorstep by Drum Circle Augusta, which the Greater Augusta Arts Council refused to let participate in this year’s festival. The Greater Augusta Arts Council board president said he would “entertain” a discussion on the matter.
