Sydney Sims (she/they) is the Music Director at Impact! They are Majoring in Creative Advertising with a minor in Photography. They have been apart of the Impact for a year, and their favorite teams to be apart of were Music Review, Graphics, Audio, and Street. She loves listening to and finding new music, and her favorite artists right now is Frank Ocean. She still holds her middle school emo days close to her heart, and they have influenced her music taste til this day.

An experiment published in Government Information Quarterly found that public record requesters who remind record custodians of the public records law are more likely to get the records they seek, particularly when asking for large amounts of data. The researchers emailed record requests to 800 randomly selected cities in Slovakia, asking for records pertaining to local referendums and city staff. Half the letters requested a minimal amount of information and the other half a lot.

According to new figures out this week from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Information Policy, Freedom of Information Act requests have dramatically surged in the past year, along with denials, backlogs, delays and costs. The annual FOIA Report for fiscal year 2024, released April 28, indicates that federal agencies saw a 25% increase of requests, from 1.2 million in 2023 to 1.5 million in 2024. As well, backlogged requests increased 33%, from 200,843 to 267,056.

Nikema Williams’ resignation as chair of the Georgia Democratic Party didn’t sit well with some constituents in her district as the party, backed by an overwhelming majority of Black voters, seeks a new direction heading into a pivotal midterm election cycle next year. Williams — who became the first Black woman ever to serve as the state’s party chair in 2019 — confirmed that she was stepping down on March 31.
