This means Ivana Bacik’s leadership term will end on May 29 if not reelected to the position. On Wednesday, the General Secretary of the Labour Party was given approval to start the process of the leadership election and party members were notified. Nominations are now open for TDs and will close on May 8.

On Wednesday, RTÉ confirmed it wrote down €3.6m on a partly failed IT project to replace its finance and HR systems. First approved in September 2016, the new system, called the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) project, was funded through money received from the sale of land in RTÉ in 2017. The national broadcaster said that in 2023, it recognised the project was an “outlier” and hired consultants from Ernst & Young to conduct a review.

When the system is introduced, alcoholic drinks will be required to carry health warnings, including the risk of liver disease and warnings against consuming alcohol when pregnant. Labels will also have to carry the number of calories in the drink and the grammes of alcohol in the product. The regulations were signed into law in 2023, and gave businesses a three-year lead time to prepare for the changes. The new standardised labels were expected to be introduced by May 22, 2026.
