    There were signs long before New York opened yesterday that share price falls were on the way. The ecstatic nature of the earlier sessions in Asia and Europe had lost its impetus by the time the US woke up, and futures tracking US markets never went into the green. Last night we saw US stocks, bonds and the dollar falling together: at least there’s a theme, even if it’s a bad one.

    President Donald Trump’s tariffs, or lack thereof, continue to dominate stock and currency markets this morning after he spoke to the World Economic Forum yesterday and said he wanted trade relations with China to be fair. Shares in Hong Kong and China rose on the news, up 1.86 per cent and 0.7 per cent respectively in the Friday session. Unless you’re Mexico and Canada, the tariff chat has been relatively calm in Trump’s first week, and much of the global trade war fear seems to have dissipated.

    Enthusiasm for President Donald Trump’s first actions, or lack thereof, is waning this morning with shares in London, Paris and Frankfurt all flat or marginally in the red, after a good day yesterday. The Stoxx 600 had hit an intra-day high on Wednesday as traders revelled in the lack of European tariffs from the new president, and were buoyed by data showing a growing appetite for European shares from global fund managers, as per Bank of America’s popular survey.
